FAQs

If you’re considering joining the Best Leg Taekwondo Academy but have a few questions, we invite you to explore some of the frequently asked questions that we receive.

Where are you based?
We run classes in and around Dulwich. 
When are the classes?

How do I enrol?
We recommend you sign up first for a trial lesson first, to see if Taekwondo is a fit for you. after which you can register to become a member by clicking on the enrol bottom on the Program page
Do you offer trial sessions?

Yes, please follow the “try a class” link on the home page

Is there any contract to sign up and if so what is the minimum period?
There are no contract sign up, however we expect our members to give a minimum of 1 month notice, pending cancellation of membership. see terms and condition for details 
How do I pay?
Payment is by direct debit upon sign up, payment will be taken 1st of every month
How do cancel my membership?
Send email to admin@bestleg.com, giving a minimum of a month notice to cancel.
Are you closed during the holidays?
We are closed during Bank Holidays, Easter, and Christmas Holidays. we run limited classes in August. see terms and conditions for more details
What do I need to bring to my first session?
Wear comfy or loose clothing and please bring bottled water
Do you do any classes for adults?
Yes we run an adult only class on Saturdays 10am – 11am. see program page for details
Do I need special clothing? And if so how do I purchase one?
You do not need to purchase the suit (dobok) at your first session. But we recommend members purchase a dobok after 1 month of training
Do you provide any classes for special needs?
We do not offer specific classes for special needs, please contact us to discuss your specific requirement.

Can my child do sparring?

Yes we conduct sparring classes regularly. we have also started our Elite sparring class, please see program page for details

Can my child opt out of full-contact activities during the sessions or competitions?
WT Taekwondo is a full contact sport. Our instructors are experienced in safely conduction sparring sessions. We ensure full contact sparring is conducted wearing the proper protection equipment. We recommend members gain some competition experience either in sparring or Poomsae, as this is fundamental to their development in the art. However we understand this might not be for everyone, therefore students who join the club can train without the added pressure of competing in tournaments.
Do you have any female only classes?
Not at this stage, however we may consider this as an option if the interest grows within our membership
What are the benefits of Taekwondo?
Self confidence, fitness, flexibility, improved aerobic and anaerobic fitness, strength and conditioning

Can I just sit and watch the training before I start?
We prefer you join in, during your trial lesson, as you can then experience the training fully. however should you wish to sit and watch we can also accommodate this.
Do I need to be in great shape before I start?
No. we will work with at your own pace.
Do I need any experience?
No experience needed.

What style of martial arts do you teach?
We teach the Kukkiwon /World Taekwondo/Olympic Style Taekwondo
Is your club suitable for beginners?
Yes majority of our members started as a white belt, some have progressed to become instructors..
Do I need to be fit to start?
No you can start at any level, we can work with you towards achieving your fitness/martial arts goals.
I'm worried about being too old/unfit/inexperienced

It is never too old to start Taekwondo. we have members who started at 55 years old plus. one of our Instructors started at age 49, and achieved her black belt in her fifties. Taekwondo is suitable for every age, sex and experience. we will work with you, at your pace to achieve your goal.

What if I have a pre-existing injury or health condition?

Please contact your doctor to ascertain if Taekwondo is suitable for you. if your doctor signs you off, we will be happy to work with you to achieve your goals.

Are there any self-defense aspects to the training?

Yes. self defence techniques are included within our sessions. our adult class focuses more on self defence and fitness.

What is the atmosphere like at your club?

Best Leg Taekwondo is a family friendly club, we believe everyone has a role to play in the development of the club and themselves. we offer an environment where you can discover yourself and excel in ways to be a proud member of the club. We will work with you to achieve YOUR GOAL, as we understand this is the main reason you have come to us. 

Are there any competitions or gradings?

We attend regurlar sparring and poomsae tournaments both within and outside the UK. we conduct 3 gradings per year, and also organise 1 black belt grading a year which is popular with other clubs. since 2022, we have organised and hosted the Best Leg International Taekwondo Open championships, which has become the go to tournament in the UK, with several participants coming from Europe, Asia and Africa. see BLITOC page for more details

Do you have any social events?

We have summer get together at the park and also christmas drinks/dinners, which is open to all our members irrespective of age
